RaiseboringWestwood Mine was the fifth largest hole ever bored and North America’s largest.
This Redbore 100 project consisted of drilling a 445 mm x 845 m pilot hole with an accuracy of 0.08%, for a net deviation of less than 700 mm at breakthrough. It established a record for most drilling hours on an RVDS tool (641.6 h). A mid-raise cutter change was completed by drifting to and intersecting the raise, resulting in significant savings in time and money.
Also included in the project scope: ventilation raises, production raises and manway raises.
Unique to the Westwood project was the installation of a geotube water-recycling system used to remove all particulates from the drill water.
